Still with me?!  Wow!  I am exhausted.  All of this Anniversary celebrating and sale-stuff just wears me out!  Or maybe it's that I have spent the last 10 days scrubbing the castle in giddy-anticipation to see my parents!!!  I need some time off!  (Which I will be taking, by the way--but more on that later!)  For now, enough said!

Have a tres-fabulous weekend!  And fingers crossed, you might be the WINNER!

One year!

It's my one year anniversary!  I realized this yesterday ... somewhere in my thoughts of St. Patrick's day and thinking about cooking corned-beef and cabbage, and thinking of other plans for the weekend, the weather and if there would be gardening or not...

I must have been thinking about a year ago and what the weather was like then.  (Bear with me ... this is how my brain works!)  So then I must have been thinking also about brocantes because with a full weekend schedule already, I had decided not to go to one (there are no 'local' ones this weekend and with the not so great cold and rainy weather I was thinking it would be a good excuse to pass.) Then I was thinking about brocantes I would have gone to last season .... when suddenly it occurred to me that I had just 'opened' Sunday Brocantes at this time, this very day --- ONE YEAR ago!  Wow!  (See? I told you I would get there!....long thought process and all ....).

So I will be spending the next week being all nostalgic and maybe even a bit sappy and write a few posts about how it started, what I have learned, how it is going now and .......... drum roll please ..... where I am headed!  Yes, there is BIG news on the horizon -- I have been holding back, waiting for the right moment to share it, and that moment is coming up soon!

So here it is for now;  365 days and 123 sales later ....

This was my first sale.  This little basket sold a few hours after I posted it.  I under-priced it....big time.  I ended up with LESS than 3 euro profit ....... but I was so excited for my first sale, I was giddy!

My next most memorable sale was this whimsical bird cage.  (It was also the start of my obsession with unusual vintage cages!)  This cage sold 14 minutes after I posted it .....FOURTEEN MINUTES.  To a gal in Saitama, Japan.  This was the first eye-opener that I would be selling worldwide and not just to the US -- and in my first year I have buyers in Japan, Malaysia, Australia, Italy, the UK, Brazil, China, Canada..... to name a few, and of course, the United States.

And the third "memorable" (as in OUCH!) sale that I made in the first few days of business was the sale of these two gorgeous demijohns.....  Love them!  But that is not the memory part.....and no, they did not break in transit!  (Thankfully!)  But they COST me $300 to ship them!  I was $300 bucks in the RED after I shipped them.  Negative profit!  Live and learn mes amis!
Shipping is tres-cher sometimes.

That might be one of the biggest lessons learned in the past year-- weigh everything, estimate generously for the weight of packing material so everything is safe and sound and hire a professional to pack and ship it (lucky me I have resident French-Guy that happens to be a pro-packer and international shipper!)--little shameless plug there! wink. wink.

Most important lessons learned in the first year of going to brocantes and flea markets and selling vintage and antiques as Sunday Brocantes .... do what you love for your day job, buy things that you adore, always pack an umbrella when going to a brocante, expect to find nothing and you will find amazing things, be happy when you don't because next time you will....
and speak French as much as possible ... and if you can't speak French well enough, speak bad-French...
... with a big smile.  BIG smile.

So that's the start of it!  It's going to be a big celebratory week!  I think I will do a little anniversary SALE, a little blog-love contest, a give-away ..... who knows what else?!

Oh--I know what else .... champagne!  Mais bien sur!

Happy Saturday mes amis -- see you again soon!

French Laundry ...

I'm kinda crazy for this wood chest I found at a brocante in Deauville.  I almost missed it.  It was closed and looked like an ordinary, rustic wood trunk.  But thankfully I had 'Middle Garcon' along with me, and at eight, he tends to be curious......

And so when he casually said, "Nice cat" .... and I looked over and saw that he had opened the trunk to peek inside .... and inside was an amazing poster advertisement for 'amidon'... a laundry starch used in Europe in the 19th century.

Well let's just say, he had me a "cat" !  The image of 'Le Chat' is exceptional!

The hand forged hardware is absolutely amazing!

I love it so that I have been working on it a bit before posting it for sale.  It is a one-of-a-kind, and most likely from the late 19th century.  The wood is pitch-pine and I have been cleaning it up and putting a bit of natural-wax on it.  The top when closed now looks gorgeous!

It will be one of those pieces that someone will see and instantly fall-in-love!  I just know it!

After-all, it happened to 'moi'!  Keep an eye out for it on Sunday Brocantes!

The table story....

A table. There's a story here.  It's my 'new' table..... except that it is not new, in fact it is very old, and it's not even new to me, I have had it for a very long time, apparently.  Although I had no idea I had it.

All I can say is that .....

... At almost 17 years of marriage, you think you know a guy ..... seriously.  And then to find out he's been holding out on you?!  That you have a fabulous old and worn 'garden-table' that could be the 'piece de resistance' in your tiny dining-room, totally mixing up your contrived-style statement and causing a perfect mismatched, rustic unexpected and so much more-"me" style instead!?

So here is how it happened.  A few weeks ago, I made a simple statement....

" I need to find some old planks to do some food shots on for my blog"
(food, by the way, looks amazing when shot on dark, old barnwood!)

And he says, "Oh, you could use the old table".

....and I say "What table?"

and he says, "You know, that old table......".

So the story he is going with is that we ......"WE"....bought this table at the sale at the Catholic Orphanage last summer.  (This sale.)  But I was only aware of the HUGE 15' long table we bought that is still in storage until we get the 'maison de reve'  which will have a HUGE dining room to put it in.  But according to 'French-Guy' we bought TWO tables that day..... I had no idea.

So here it is!  Who would have thought that I would ever .... eva.....incorporate 'mint-green' into my decor palette?  But I LOVE this table....every scratched, dinged, chippy, mint-green bit of it!

There you have it. The story of the table.  Which fits perfectly, in my tiny home, and looks amazing and lovely, despite it's unfortunate color.  J'adore la table!  Don't you?

Happy Monday mes amis!

Sunday Brocante ~ Touques ~

S-U-N !  Sun!  On a Sunday!  Is there anything better?!  I managed to get to two sales this weekend ... a  'Puce des Couturières' in Honfleur on Saturday -- and a small brocante today in Touques.

You might notice that I posted about a brocante in Touques only a few weeks ago.  At this time of year the smaller local brocantes are quite regular in very close-by towns ....

So it is easy to make a quick stop or fast shopping spree less than 20 minutes from home ....

... And still get back home in time to squeeze in a good Sunday lunch, or a few decadent hours in the garden planning for the summer plantings, digging out new beds and getting some dirt under the nails.

Especially if you have a 'small-helper' like I do.  Ma petite-fille is already showing early skills for spotting excellent vintage items .... I think she has an amazing aesthetic eye!

Look for an absolutely fabulous and very, very old wicker-encased demijohn, a few more wonderful baskets, and a flour-sifting tray that is absolutely stunning-French-farm-chic!  Just a few of my favorite-finds from the brocantes this weekend!

Soon to be posted this week on Etsy.

A fabulous weekend here mes amis!  I hope you had the same!

Bon Dimanche!

New on Sunday Brocantes!

"Sometimes life events push you beyond your known capabilities.  I am blessed to have had this happen to me more than a few times in my life; from the simplest academic endeavors, a new relationship, the birth of a child, or a total change of routines and culture ... events can take your comfortable norm, dump it out like a duffle-bag, mix it up and shuffle it around, and then pack it up again and move it to an entirely different location ...

....  The resulting re-organization and re-prioritizing (and if you are very, very lucky) the subsequent inspired explosion of creativity, puts a new spin on your life and gives new meaning to the originating event."

This has happened to me in a million ways since moving to France.  I have grown, I have explored, and I have been challenged.  The result of all of this has been doing things I only 'played-at' before...... cooking and recipe creating, writing (more than ever!), DIY projects all over my home, searching for and selling French vintage and antiques on the web and photography.....
at a new level.... (and not necessarily in that order!)

One of the very, very best out-comes of all of this, is the opportunity to share it with you!

On rare occasions, I do take the advice of others ... really.  I do.   So after more than a few friends and clients suggested that I make my photography available for sale as fine-art photographic prints -- I finally listened.

I am so excited to announce that I will be selling limited edition fine-art photography of images taken all around France on my Etsy shop!  I hope you enjoy seeing the images, and if you love them, consider having one or two hanging in your home.

Images are printed on high-quality photo paper and are available in any size. I am initially listing them as 8 x 12 inches.  All images are signed and dated on the back and of course will have the copyright watermark removed.  They are sent First Class La Poste in a rigid envelope and are ready for framing!  I welcome custom size and quantity requests!

I will be slowly adding more to the shop!  So please take a look and let me know what you think!

Happy Friday!

What an incredible week!
Thanks for being a part of it mes amis!

Basket Case ...

You know me by now, right?  I am crazy for vintage and antique wicker.  I love the look, the texture, the workmanship, the functional charm....

I found this orchard 'picker's basket' last weekend in Honfleur.  I am in Normandy, the land of apples (known as the Calvados region).  This beauty was most likely used for picking apples or pears.

After I bought it I slung the strap over my shoulder and filled it with my other purchases and I think I could have walked all the way home like that!

I just listed it on Sunday Brocantes. ... but can I really part with it?

This gorgeous trunk I found last Friday at the Antique Fair in Pont L'Eveque.
It is from Paris, early 1900's..... used for travel and storage.

The basket was purchased almost instantly after I listed it.
I absolutely loved it, too!

I guess you could say I am over-the-moon for old wicker.
It looks beautiful in any setting, both charmingly functional and decorative.

Yes, c-r-a-z-y for it!  Call me a basket-case.
I don't mind at all!

A bientot mes amis!
